Houston is located in eastern Texas, situated on Texas' gulf coastal plain, which has made flooding a recurring problem for the city. Boasting a population of 2,324,082 (as of 2025), Houston is Texas' most populous city and the 4th-largest city in the United States. The city was named after then-President of the Republic of Texas--former General Sam Houston. Houston sits primarily in Harris County, where it serves as county seat.
