About The Whole Herd

Wyman Poe has spent his lifetime in the management of purebred ranches, providing nutritional requirements, planning genetic mating and marketing progeny and ranch names. This chosen life path followed the same way of life his father, Allen Poe and maternal grandfather, Wesley Woodard charted in the early 1950's. Their desire to produce superior cattle and operate a ranching enterprise profitably was observed and instilled in Wyman at a very early age. Animal technology was in its infant years when Wyman first watched artificial insemination with bull semen in a herd of Hereford cows in the late 50's. This semen was kept frozen with dry ice and stored in their deep freezer. That observation at a young age developed into valuable experience while in junior high and high school working on the ranch that his father was a partial owner and managed. After graduating with his animal science degree from Abilene Christian University in 1975, he was employed by Bates Limousin Ranch. He was responsible for the everyday ranch management, breeding decisions and implementing bull sales and production sales. Up to 1000 cows per year were artificially inseminated with bull semen that had made significant progress in both collection and freezing techniques in that 20 year period. Other advances in animal science technology helped spawn unprecedented purebred cattle numbers in the mid 1970's and through the late 1980'S. Manipulating the estrus cycle, non-surgical embryo recovery and transfer and the importation of continental breeds created a purebred frenzy. Birth, weaning and yearling weights collected during that time became the foundation of the Expected Progeny Differences that breed associations now provide. EPDs give a producer or interested buyer of purebred cattle a detailed numeric analysis of measured traits. From some of the first calves produced by A.I. to the world's first cloned beef cattle and all the steps in between, Wyman has been active in these technological changes of the cattle industry. This journey also produced successful bull and female sales along with national champions in 5 breeds. Building on the ranch experience, Wyman's resume also includes livestock sale management, advertising agency account manager, bull semen collection, feed yard cattle procurement, nutrition sales and semen marketing. This employment history has provided him an in-depth working knowledge of how these segments of the livestock world operate with some dependency each other. Wyman has observed that knowledge, planning and patience produce results. To achieve a positive outcome, each ranching enterprise identifies the direction and goals the owner wants the ranch or herd to achieve. Next, a budget is created with legitimate costs and pencil marketing projections and income revenue. Finally, evaluate the current operation and adjust or implement a management plan to accomplish these goals.
